Helping UAVs Make History

Since the Wright Brothers made their first successful attempt to get people into the sky in 1903, the aerospace industry has been on a nonstop flight toward the future of technology.

Of course, the industry has come a long way since then, and the work being done today is nothing short of incredible. Aviation history continues and at CEF we love being a part of it.

In 2013, history was made with the first-ever autonomous carrier-based UAV flight by the X-47B. This Northrop Grumman tailless, strike fighter-sized UAV is part of a project with the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) Carrier Demonstration program, and its flight tests have proved highly successful. In fact, the project epitomizes the innovation that Northrop Grumman and the entire aerospace industry stand for.

But it doesn’t end there. Recently, in April of this year, a historic moment was achieved yet again. The X-47B became the first and only UAV to successfully conduct the first-ever Autonomous Aerial Refueling (AAR) in history.

Beyond the actual achievement of this event, this means great things for the entire UAV industry. AAR makes possible the potential of unmanned surveillance, strike, and reconnaissance for the U.S. military. Everything the Navy envisions for its use of unmanned aircraft is now closer to fruition as a result of this event. It also means that the X-47B is a force to be reckoned with.

The future of aerospace and defense technology is here today; this recent achievement brings us closer to unlocking possibilities that were previously unimaginable, and are now endless. We’re proud of the work being done, and very excited about the future.
